There’s nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night with a horrible toothache or seeing your child in pain after sustaining a mouth injury. It’s scary and confusing, and you need to know who to call and what to do when the unexpected occurs.

Fortunately, our Toowoomba dental clinic offers prompt emergency care for you and your loved ones, but how do you know when your situation is considered a dental emergency?

Please keep reading to learn more.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

At Pure Dental Toowoomba, we treat all kinds of dental emergencies, and we’ll do our best to provide same-day care when you need us most.

Some of the most common dental emergencies we treat include the following:

  • Severe tooth pain — When over-the-counter medication isn’t working, we’ll relieve your tooth pain and treat the issue.
  • Facial swelling — If you have a dental infection that’s causing your face to swell, we need to see you as soon as possible.
  • Knocked-out tooth — Time is critical when your tooth gets completely knocked out. Without touching the tooth’s roots, try to reinsert it into the socket. If this doesn’t work, store it inside your cheek and contact our clinic immediately.
  • Soft tissue injury — If you sustain an injury to your lips, gums or other soft tissues, it’s best to give us a call unless you’re bleeding uncontrollably. If this is the case, you should go to the nearest emergency room.
  • Lost or broken restorations — For a lost or broken filling, crown or other restoration, we need to see you so we can keep bacteria from the affected area and restore your smile.

Is a Broken Tooth an Emergency?

Yes, if you break your tooth, you should contact our clinic for an appointment. Even if it doesn’t hurt, you may expose the tooth’s inner pulp chamber, and this can lead to pain and infection. It’s better to be safe than sorry in this situation.
