Prevention Dentistry in Toowoomba

At Pure Dental Toowoomba, we embrace a holistic approach to oral healthcare, providing patients with prevention plans to ensure long-term dental health and well-being.

Dr Nicola and her team help you avoid uncomfortable and costly dental procedures by creating a plan for daily oral hygiene practices and procedures that help prevent common dental conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Active Maintenance for Long-Term Dental Health

Participating in active maintenance check-ups every six months with our dental practice can contribute to optimum oral hygiene and health. During your consultation, our hygienist or OHT will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, jaw and surrounding tissues for anything that requires attention.

If no issues are present, we perform a clean before finishing with a polish. We may recommend fluoride treatment for those more prone to tooth decay if the patient agrees to it. We may recommend wearing a splint or mouthguard at night during sleep for those struggling with tooth wear due to clenching and grinding (bruxism).

At Pure Dental Toowoomba, you always decide on the best treatment for your smile.

What Are the Advantages of Prevention Dentistry?

Visiting your dentist in Toowoomba every six months for active maintenance helps protect your smile, dental health, and overall well-being. Prevention dentistry offers some additional advantages.
Cost Effective
Spotting problems like tooth decay or gum disease early on typically allows for less invasive and less costly treatment procedures.
Overall Health Benefits
Routine active maintenance appointments can help protect your overall well-being if we can detect gum disease in the earliest stages.
Prevents Emergencies
Being proactive about caring for your dental health helps many patients avoid dental emergencies by identifying problems early on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining oral health, and at Pure Dental Toowoomba, we typically recommend visiting every six months for most patients. However, Dr Nicola may suggest more frequent visits based on your individual needs.

Why twice yearly? These regular visits allow us to:

  • Monitor your oral health and catch potential issues early
  • Professionally clean your teeth and remove built-up tartar
  • Check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease
  • Screen for oral cancer
  • Assess any changes in your bite or jaw alignment
  • Update your dental records and x-rays as needed

Some patients may need to visit more frequently, particularly if they:

  • Have a history of gum disease
  • Are at higher risk of dental caries
  • Smoke or use tobacco products
  • Have diabetes or other medical conditions affecting oral health
  • Are undergoing specific dental treatments
  • Have a weakened immune system

Personalised Dental Care Tailored to You

During your consultation, Dr Nicola will assess your oral health and recommend a check-up schedule tailored to your specific situation. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Regular dental visits help maintain your oral health and can save you time, discomfort, and expense in the long run.

If you notice any concerns between scheduled visits—such as tooth pain, bleeding gums or unusual changes in your mouth—don't wait for your next check-up. Contact our Toowoomba dental practice straight away, and we'll ensure you receive prompt attention.

Working with OHTs

Our oral hygiene therapy department is the backbone of the preventive side of the practice, which we have built up since beginning in December 2017. OHTs (oral hygiene therapists) free up our dentist to carry out the complex side of dental treatment while they look after the regular active maintenance and prevention side of dentistry.

OHTs at Pure Dental Toowoomba are fully trained in providing dental examinations, soft tissue examinations, simple and advanced periodontal (gum) care, simple restorations, and orthodontic assessment for all ages.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the primary support system for your teeth—your gums and jawbone. When your gums aren’t healthy, your teeth are at risk.

Gum disease has also been closely linked with other systemic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Active maintenance visits help us identify gum disease as early as possible (gingivitis), giving you the best chance of managing or reversing your condition before it advances (periodontitis).
